ReBirthed
public performance by Agua Dulce
Haulover Beach - Miami, FL, December 3, 2020
For ReBirthed, artist Agua Dulce explored the concepts of rest, reflection, and renewal amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, personal turmoil, and political unrest of 2020.
Agua, with deliberate and solemn movements, excavated the earth with hands fueled by determination and purpose. Lost in the repetitive action, as the hole deepened Agua's movements became more visceral, imbued with a sense of urgency and longing. The meditative act of digging became a metaphorical journey inward, as Agua sought refuge from the chaos of the outside world within the womb of the earth itself.
As the hole reached its depths, Agua tenderly lowered themselves into the earth. With each handful of sand cascading over their body, Agua shed the weight of their burdens, surrendering to the transformative power of the earth's embrace. After a period of contemplation, Agua emerged from the earth, drawn to the ocean's vast expanse as a symbol of spiritual renewal and cleansing.
The absence left by the excavated hole serves as a powerful reminder of the act of unburdening and the transient nature of our experiences. Embodying the liberation that comes from shedding the weight of our struggles, in its emptiness we find space for potential—a portal in the earth for new beginnings and unforeseen growth.
